Figure 2 illustrates the the TAMCAM shop floor control system. Each equipment level controller runs on a separate personal computer running Microsoft Windows for Workgroups and is connected to the vendor-supplied device controllers. The workstation controller and the Arena simulation run on a personal computer running Microsoft Windows NT. TCP/IP sockets are used for communications between the modules. All communications go through a software router running on a personal computer using Microsoft Windows NT. The shop floor control system in this environment is responsible converting the production requirements into specific instructions for the individual pieces of equipment and interacting with the equipment to implement the instructions.
